Without the list, your internet business is a non-entity. <br />
It's that simple. The lifeblood of online businesses such <br />
as network marketing or MLM and content-driven sites rely <br />
on their lists. In fact, every beginner and experienced <br />
internet marketer by now is probably familiar with the <br />
mantra, 'the money is on the list.' This is why careful <br />
attention is required in order to build a listing that <br />
is relevant to a specific marketing campaign. Here are <br />
some essential information you need to know about list <br />
building: <br />

What, exactly, is a list? <br />
<br />
It's simply a mailing list - a list of names and <br />
corresponding e-mail addresses, each of which represents <br />
a potential customer, subscriber or recruit. Each time <br />
you have news, updated information, a fresh article or <br />
video or are promoting a new product, you will be using <br />
this list to send e-mails to. <br />

How lists are built <br />
<br />
The most common way of building a list is through on-site <br />
invitations. Let's say you are promoting a weekly newsletter <br />
regarding pet care. Now a newsletter is completely useless <br />
if it doesn't have any readers, so your goal is to find as <br />
many subscribers as you can.<br />

To do this, you must create an invitation from your <br />
website through a signup tag. This invitation must <br />
contain all the necessary information that your <br />
subscriber will need to fully understand what exactly <br />
it is you're offering. The opt-in invitation should <br />
be specific to a particular product or service you're <br />
trying to promote. <br />

In this case, the tag should inform the recipient that <br />
it is an invitation to sign up for a weekly newsletter <br />
that will be sent through e-mail. Something like, 'To <br />
receive more tips or articles on pet care, sign up for <br />
my free weekly newsletter.' <br />

Once the recipient agrees to be part of your listing, <br />
you can then keep his e-mail address in a database or <br />
spreadsheet. You could use a program to help you manage <br />
and organize this listing so e-mail addresses relevant <br />
to a particular product or service you have are easier <br />
to access. <br />

The importance of effective list building <br />
<br />
An effective list building effort should result to a <br />
quality list. A quality listing consists of individuals <br />
who belong to your target audience. If your website is <br />
about pet care, then the quality audience for you is <br />
one that is composed of pet owners and pet lovers. <br />
Anyone who is uninterested in pets will not and should <br />
not be part of your list building efforts. <br />
<br />
The goal here is simple - effective list building helps <br />
you filter a segment of the huge market out there that <br />
will not respond favorably to your campaigns. With a <br />
quality list, you're more likely to interact with an <br />
audience who is more likely to participate in your <br />
marketing efforts, sign up for future offerings, become <br />
your recruits or referrals or even purchase from you. <br />

Opting in <br />
<br />
There is one very important thing you should remember <br />
about list building and that is permission. It is <br />
considered unethical practice for a legitimate online <br />
business such as yours to include e-mail addresses of <br />
people to your list when they did not agree to such an <br />
arrangement. Without an express permission from these <br />
people, your e-mail messages, no matter how well-<br />
intentioned, will be viewed as spam. <br />

Effective list building involves permission-based <br />
marketing which comes in the form of the opt-in listing. <br />
The opt-in list is simply a list of e-mail addresses <br />
of people who agreed to a specific offer you made. <br />
Without this explicit expression of acceptance, you <br />
cannot and should not include these individuals in <br />
your list, no matter how tempting or valuable they are. <br />
