How to start a business with No Capital, Be your own Boss

I have spent close to 30 years working with private businesses,
consulting to increase the only number that matters - after
tax business profits.  In working with this special area of
business and private ownership, it has become evident that
there are certain traits of successful business owners. 
This aligns with the findings of many published works on
management of giant, multinational corporations.
 
Now is the right time to release my practical no nonsense
conclusions that have arisen from almost 30 years of studying
private businesses.  I know many people want to take control
of their financial lives. They want to be rewarded for the
value they generate for business and they are impatient with
their treatment as yet another commodity provider, ie corporate
slave.  This is especially so, given the current uncertain
climate of the economy in so many countries with many caught
up in retrenchments and downsizing,
 
There  are many steps, of course, in setting up a business. 
But, as every teacher knows, you teach a little at a time
and provide key data. When that is mastered you move on
to more sophisticated teachings.  Tom Hua practices this
in his ebusiness course – “Don’t be overwhelmed do one thing
at a time”.
 
So, when it comes to starting a business, you should focus
on the simple basic steps so that what you do is easy,
achievable and can be done immediately. 
 
There is no question that there are certain traits of
successful business people. The thing about having been
around for a long time, is, I’ve seen booms, recessions,
businesses that succeed and those that fail.  I have come
to the conclusion that success has nothing to do with the
way you dress, the way you talk, where you were educated,
whether you have qualifications or several university
degrees.  What is important for a successful business is
the business owner’s mental framework.  People need to be
what their businesses need them to be.  We are so fortunate
that over the last 30 years, the training of the mind to
perform at peak levels is common place amongst top athletes
and this coaching has now extended to the game of business.
 
Frankly, business begins with and ends with you. It is all
about you – how you think and what you think are crucial. 
But it’s not about knowing it and studying it, you need to
actually do it – change your habits so that you are decisive,
persistent, determined, acquire a can-do attitude, know
exactly why you’re in business and what it is you expect to
achieve, have unwavering focus, and action things to make
it happen.
 
Successful business people do not delegate responsibility
for their future. You outsource services, don’t do the busy
work yourself, but the one thing you cannot delegate is
being in charge of your life and being in charge of your
business.
 
Enough of that – you want to know what needs to happen for
a successful start up.
 
* Which ideas will be profitable?

First things first - Begin with a list of 20 workable ideas.
From this list, determine one that can be started quickly,
with immediate returns from your efforts and current skills.
Learn how to cull the selection to determine which is most
profitable.  Identify areas of organic growth, this means
there is natural, increasing demand.  There are some
excellent books on trend watching and it would seem that
the change in demographics, with the onslaught of retiring
babyboomers will mean opportunity for services to that
section of the population. Boomers, afterall, hold more
than 50% of the wealth and will soon choose not to work
but will continue to require services.  I am sure in the
next few years, Old will mean Gold.

Watch out for industries or products that are subject to
rapid technological changes. You don’t want to be involved
in a soon to be obsolescent product.

Watch out if your product has a limited market and you
cannot charge sufficiently to recover the cost of marketing
the product. 

It is all about demand for your product or service. Do lots
of people want your product? Do they hungrily want your product?
 
* The simplest, most obvious law

 “It is literally true that you can succeed best and quickest
by helping others to succeed.” - Napoleon Hill
 
This means business is ALL about the customer. People only
buy from you because you have something that will enhance
their life. So, help your customer succeed. Give them what
it is they want from you and give value.
 
 
* Success means Planning and this involves thinking ahead!

If you’re serious about setting yourself up in a successful
business, you already know:

- it’s not just about increasing your revenue or profit –
it is not a short term play

- it’s not just about a great idea – you are creating an
asset. You’ll move from technician to entrepreneur

-   it’s about understanding that you need to be what your
business needs you to be – this means having the right mental
attitude

- it’s about being a doer, someone who takes action.

So, if you are truly serious about building your wealth, you
need to plan.
 
* Money, it’s all about free cash flow.

As a business person you will need to learn the fundamentals
of the numbers you’ll need to know to run a successful business.
What do you need to earn as a minimum? How will you repay
debt? You need to make sure your business generates free cash
flow – that’s the money for you.  I am sure you know about
profit, and how it is calculated.

This is important but of even greater importance is Free
Cash Flow. This is the life blood of business and it is vital.
Profit is important but if your profits are locked in your
business to fund working capital, that’s well and good if you
have other resources to liquidity.  A good business ensures
they plan for Free Cash Flow.  This is the money that’s free
for you to do with as you please – to spend, to invest, to
pay for the children’s education, to splurge on yourself or
to purchase investments outside the business.

When you understand your numbers you work backwards.
Identify the profit you want. Identify from this how much
will be reinvested in the business and the remainder paid
to you as your Free Cash Flow.  From this point, if you
manage your numbers and understand your key ratios, you
can easily calculate the value of sales and the number of
products you will need to sell, so as to achieve your desired
Free Cash Flow.

I cannot stress enough. Liquidity is GOLD. It is everything. 
Many failures are because they did not see the liquidity
crisis looming. The thing is, you can plan for this. But
you need to know how to figure it out.
