When I decided to start an internet business, I could have <br />
used a guide to WordPress.<br />
<br />
I was having a lot of fun, but I had no idea what I was doing. <br />
I started out with a blog about primitive crafts and antiques. <br />
I certainly wasn't selling anything. I sure could have used <br />
a guide to WordPress back then!<br />
<br />
I'd never heard of SEO. I had no idea what keyword research <br />
was or the first thing about driving traffic to my site. I <br />
just knew I wanted a pretty blog. My naive assumption is that <br />
it would all just happen naturally if I had a pretty blog and <br />
nice crafts.<br />
<br />
What a Knuckle Head I was! It took much longer than it should <br />
have to sink in that nothing was ever going to happen if I <br />
continued on the path I was on. When it did finally sink in, <br />
I was at a loss. So I hunkered down, rolled up my sleeves and <br />
went to work! I had a lot to learn.<br />
<br />
Your Website/Blog can make you or break you. I made the <br />
mistake of continuing on with the blog platform I was using. <br />
It was the one that Google owns, so I thought "How can that <br />
get any better?" Now I know differently.<br />
<br />
If you don't have a self-hosted blog or website, you need <br />
one. You should be in control of your content and your <br />
website. When you go with one of those other blogging <br />
platforms where they host your blog on their site and tack <br />
the name of your blog on the back of their site name <br />
(i.e. blablabla (dot) com/your-blogs-name) you have no control <br />
over mishaps. You can't retrieve your content if they crash, <br />
get hacked, or go belly up. You just have to start over from <br />
scratch. I highly recommend that you purchase a domain name <br />
from GoDaddy (dot) com instead of tagging along behind someone <br />
elses domain name. By the way, they call everything behind <br />
the.com/ a slug. You don't want to be a slug do you? Not so <br />
professional. It makes people wonder if you are in it for the <br />
long haul.<br />

That's where WordPress comes in. WordPress is a blogging <br />
platform that you install on your own self-hosted domain. <br />
Basically that means that you pay a Web Hosting service <br />
$7-$8 bucks a month to store your website and all of your <br />
content on their massive servers. As long as you are paying <br />
for the service, you own a piece of internet property. Your <br />
website is like your home sitting on that piece of real <br />
estate. You own it. If something goes wrong, your hosting <br />
service will be able to retrieve your stuff from your data <br />
base on their server. You are protected. What's yours is <br />
still yours. Cool huh?<br />

More about WordPress... WordPress is a simple to learn, point <br />
and click blog and website builder. It's free. You install <br />
it with a couple of clicks to your domain within your hosting <br />
service. So easy to do. Then you customize your blog or <br />
website any way you want it. It's extremely easy to use <br />
and anyone can do it once you learn how. Anyone. If I could <br />
learn to use it, so can you. Trust this self-proclaimed <br />
technophobe turned WordPress Ninja!<br />
<br />
WordPress is so versatile. You can make your blog or website <br />
look any way you want it to and have any functionality you <br />
need it to have. If you can imagine it, WordPress can do it. <br />
Themes create the look and basic functions of your WordPress <br />
site. Plugins are little applications (apps) that adds or <br />
changes the functionality of your site. It's ability to do <br />
something, like making super simple opt in and sales pages <br />
or changing up the fonts, making it easy for Google to find <br />
and index your content and connecting to social media. There <br />
are oodles and gobs of themes and plugins to choose from. <br />
Wonderful stuff!<br />
<br />
The point is that WordPress is so easy to learn and simple <br />
to use once you know how, there's no reason not use WordPress <br />
to make your site super functional, search engine friendly <br />
and super cool!<br />
<br />
Oh, did I mention that you can fire your webmaster? That's <br />
right, you will no longer have to pay anyone to make changes <br />
to your site. You can do it yourself in a matter of minutes <br />
for free. Who doesn't like free? No more being held hostage <br />
by your web guy! With a little guidance, it just doesn't get <br />
any easier than WordPress.<br />
